Summer Dodgeball - Week Seven: Playoffs./Summer Softball - Week Six: Playoffs.

Big week in my recreational sports life! Let's talk dodgeball first. (And how 'bout that sweet pic? I stole it from Erin.)

If you looked at the stats on the regular season and studied them even half-assedly, you could have predicted how this night ended up going, at least W/L-wise. How it actually transpired is another, slightly more interesting story.

To start off with, we almost got knocked out in the first round of the playoff tourney. We played a team that we had beat twice during the regular season, but neither of those wins had been extremely convincing. Especially the second one, which was either last week or the week before. They almost took us then, and I was beginning to wonder if maybe they had our number. For the first half of our match, it looked like they did. They took a 3-1 lead and it looked like time wasn't going to permit our comeback. Luckily, we knocked out a few quick wins, forcing a tiebreaker. We squeaked by, picking up a decisive win in the final game, and moved on to round two.

Our second match was immediately following our first, which meant we had no time to catch our breath. The day was hot and the sweat (at least on me) was pouring. We were facing our sister team (friends of ours), who we had split our series with in the regular season. Again, we came out slow. After falling behind 2-0, we fought back, tied it up, and ended up winning in a very close fifth game. Another well-earned victory, I felt.

At this point we were both tired and revved up. We needed water, but if there was a groove, we may have been in it. But, because of the way tournaments work, we had to sit for forty minutes. I'm not using this as an excuse for why we got annihilated in the championship game, but it didn't help. By the time we came back out, we were sluggish. Meanwhile, the team we were facing had only played one game and they had just finished it. They were loose and ready to take us apart. And they did.

Back to the reason I said it was predictable: they were the first place team to our second place team all season long, and the only team we couldn't beat. I had a feeling it would come down to us and them in the final game, and I had a feeling (as much as I hate to say it) that they would best us. And they did. So, that's that. Another second place finish. Which I actually think is pretty damn good.

On to softball.
My leg kick when I hit is getting absurd. Look at that. I love it.

Apparently they needed us to make the playoffs work mathematically in a tournament setting, because we wouldn't have made it in if there were any stringent requirements like, say, having won a game during the regular season. Whatever–we had a great game, and even though we lost, I felt it was our most respectable loss of the season. I think the opposing team had pity us and let up towards the end (they certainly weren't running up the score, which I thought was really cool), but either way, they only beat us by around 12 runs, which wasn't terrible.

I got a new bat that I hadn't used yet, so we had a great time breaking it in. I think I only went 2-4 (maybe 3-5?), but I had some nice, deep flyouts that felt good off the new stick. Trying to get a team together for the next season, which starts in a month or so. Same with dodgeball. Until then, I gotta find a way to stay in shape.

Is it legal to hunt hobos for sport yet?
